Water is Essential For Life - Part 9 of My Weight Loss Journey

Lets tackle nutrition!

Nutrition is an essential part of health and weight loss/control and the feeling of wellbeing.

I believe that understanding some of this will help you to start making beneficial changes to your diet.

So let's tackle the subject of water.

Water - the essence of life

For some reason a lot of people do not like drinking water unless it is mixed with fruit squash, tea or coffee. Mixed with these substances it dilutes it's health value.
So I will start by going over the reasons we should drink water and plenty of it - at least 1.5 ltrs per day and more if you have exercised or done anything that has made you sweat.

Benefits - the scientific bit:

• Water is essential for life
• Regulates body temperature
• Transports nutrients around the body
• Involved in every stage of digestion
• Carries waste products out of the body
• Enables the formation of cells and tissues
• Provides a medium in which metabolism occurs
• Sends messages between our cells so that our muscles can contract
• Protects the nervous system
• Carries oxygen and carbon dioxide round the body
• Forms lubricant for joints and membranes

How cool is that!

Things you need to know:

• At the point we feel thirsty our body is already dehydrated.
• Often when we feel hungry we are really thirsty.
• The colour of our urine is a clear indicator of our body water levels. If it is a light straw colour we are hydrated if it is any darker we are dehydrated. The darker the colour the more dehydrated we are.

How can we adjust to drinking water:

If you can drink water - go ahead and drink at least 1.5 ltrs a day
For those of you who struggle to drink water there is a correct way of doing this that makes it quite easy.
SIP your water regularly throughout the day. You will soon be able to consume your daily allowance.
Do not drink a full glass of water all at once as this will just go straight through your system and you will be running to the toilet all day. Even when exercising you should SIP.
Build up your water intake if you are not used to it. Any amount of pure water will be beneficial to you.

While looking for information on diets and fitness, it seems that these two topics are considered as separate ones, and indeed they often attract two different kinds of people. On one hand low-activity or sedentary people concerned about their excessive weight and how to get rid of it, on the other hand active people, athletes or simply gym trainees mainly concerned on how to put on weight, muscle mass that is, at any cost and ending up putting on fat as well as a little muscle.

Both these adaptive reactions will transform and idle body into a calorie furnace, preparing it to absorb all nutrients in an effective way. That is putting on muscle, which in turn burns more calories(even when idle), which in turn will lead to loose fat, to strength gains, to heavier weights handled, and so on in a beneficial circle. Fat loss and muscle gain are meant to work together, it is perfectly normal. It is sad that many people are mislead by muscle magazines and supplement industry in the wrong path of action, ending up over trained and fatter without much of a physique to show for despite their best efforts. Don't let yourself be misled, I've been there before and wasted years training the way the "champs" do. If you are a normal person with plenty of will but scarce results you should train and feed in a very different way. Only then will you gain muscle and loose fat at the same time.

Get A Good Night's Sleep And Lose Weight

Have you been working out and dieting but still not losing weight as fast as you think you should? Maybe you are not getting a good night's sleep. If you are not getting enough sleep you could be sabotaging your efforts to lose weight and get in shape.

The other morning at my 6am work out session with my personal trainer, I was complaining about how tired I was and how hard it was to get up so early to work out. He asked a simple question, "How much sleep are you getting?"

That got me thinking about the connection between sleep and weight loss. The first obvious link is that when I am not getting enough sleep I am too tired to get up and go work out; which, in turn, derails my weight loss efforts. What about the less obvious connection between getting a good night's sleep and losing weightWA? I decided to dig deeper. How important is it to get a good night's sleep? I found out, it is very important.

Researching the Link Between Sleep and Weight Loss

As it turns out there is a significant link to the amount of sleep a person gets and their weight. Several studies done at the University of Chicago in Illinois, Stanford University in California and other universities across the US show that people who get less sleep gain more weight and have higher percentages of body fat. Why? What could sleep possibly have to do with what I weigh? Well it comes down to hormones; leptin, ghrelin and cortisol.

Ghrelin hormones are your "I'm hungry" indicators; they tell you when your body needs to eat. Lack of sleep causes an increase in ghrelin levels. If you don't get enough sleep you have more of these hunger hormones telling you that you are hungry. Leptin hormones tell you when you are full. Lack of sleep causes leptin levels to drop. If you do not have enough leptin your body doesn't recognize that you are full and you over eat. Lack of sleep can increase the production of the stress hormone, cortisol. Cortisol is best known for increasing belly fat. So it turns all that extra food into belly fat! Voila you gain weight or if you are trying to lose weight your efforts are thwarted. What a cycle. Who knew that sleep is that important?

How Much Sleep Should You Get ?

According to a 16 year study presented in 2006 at the American Thoracic Society International Conference women who slept 7 hours or more per night weigh less than women who slept 5 hours or less.Women who slept 6 hours per night were 6% more likely to be obese and 12% more likely to gain at least 33lbs or more. Women who slept 5 hours per night were 15% more likely to be obese and 32% more likely to gain at least 33lbs or more.

That seems pretty significant to me. There are also many other effects that lack of sleep has on your body. The experts say that at least 7 hours of sleep a night is what we need.

Getting enough sleep is even more important if you are working out or stressing the body. When you work out it tears down the muscles so they can rebuild themselves bigger and stronger. Sleep is the time that the body does that. If you don't give the body enough time to properly heal itself you eventually wear out.

So I guess mom was right, the key to a healthy life is to eat right, exercise and get a good night's sleep.

Getting more sleep is a relatively simple task but sometimes all of us need help with the other two, eating right and exercising.

It is not necessarily the time of day you eat that will end up as unhealthy weight gain, but the type of foods you tend to eat late at night combined with not burning it off physically afterwards. You know what your favorite junk foods are to eat after everyone else has gone to bed; cookies, ice creams, chips, and whatever else your mind says will just hit the spot at the time. Eating late at night will not give your heart the rest it needs because it has to work overtime to help digest all the food you just ate. Below are 8 Ways that will help you be more successful in your diet, and will help you put an end to any bad eating habits that could derail your weight loss progress. 1. Be sure to eat three well balanced meals during the day but don't forget to have two or three low fat snacks between meals. Many people try to eat too few calories during the day and then start binging late at night. Don't skip out on breakfast and try eating most of your calories before 7pm. 2. When you get the urge to eat late at night, try drinking 1 to 2 cups of water or a favorite sugar free beverage. You will more than likely still want to eat after this but remind yourself that you feel hungry late at night due to your routine of eating late or it is because your mind thinks it needs to eat again. Breaking this routine is like learning to quit smoking and takes fortitude and support. Put a note on your pantry, refrigerator or wherever else needed; include your diet goals to lose 20 or 30 pounds and in large letters write something like: I WILL NOT EAT AFTER 8pm! 3. Quit buying your favorite junk food items and avoid late night binging by hiding all high calorie foods. Instead of eating junk food, have a piece of sugar-free hard candy or reach for a pack of sugar-free pudding.
4. TV can be hazardous to your health! If your favorite TV serious comes on too late at night, try recording it so you can watch it earlier in the evening. It is easier to start binging at night when you are sitting down watching the television. Keep finding ways to be active by working on a favorite hobby and NOT watching just TV for hours on end. Watching your favorite fast food ad on TV can subconsciously trigger the impulse to eat and being bored can be one of the biggest dangers to late night eating. 5. Record your Weight Loss Progress! Have a written copy of your diet plan easily assessable, which will keep your goal of losing weight always on your mind. This will allow you to see your progress, as you begin to see your late night eating routine begin to improve and your weight loss goals getting closer and closer.
6. Be Thrilled to be Alive! Mix up your daily routine and get moving! You've already decided to get healthier and diet; now it's your responsibility to be proactive about your late night eating habits. Did you know that on average it takes 6 weeks to break a habit and start a new one? Begin creating a good healthy lifestyle and stick to it until it becomes a new life pattern. Once you see and feel the difference it makes in your health and fitness, you will be so excited and well pleased, it will be like an extra burst of energy that will help you reach your weight loss goals even faster! 7. Snacking does not have to be the enemy we've made it out to be. It's what we snack on and how much we eat that matters. I was relieved to find out that; occasional snacks that are low in fat are okay. I enjoy low calorie snacks and my favorite treat is 1-2 scoops of sugar free butter pecan ice-cream on Sundays. Select a favorite snack and see if you can find a low calorie or sugar free version of it. Just remember though that even if the snacks are low fat, they may be loaded full of salt! Just because it is advertised as low fat or is lower in carbohydrates doesn't mean you can eat three times as much. It's okay to enjoy it but don't over indulge yourself 8. Believe the Best in Yourself! Become energetic and totally committed to losing weight; you can do it! Since you know what your weak areas are, don't give into your old bad habits. When you feel tempted to snack late at night, it's an artificial feeling that will go away when you go to bed. The next morning you can wake up and enjoy a healthy breakfast to welcome in another new day and you will be even more closer to being a happier, healthier you! Unrestrained eating late at night is a common battle for nearly all of dieters. Final thought: If you are on a diet, you need to IMMEDIATELY put a stop to the mid-night munchies. Unfortunately, many dieters will do great during the day only to blow it late at night; but that doesn't have to be what happens to you!
