Staying Fit While on the Road and Traveling

One of the biggest challenges with travel, outside of finding your luggage and your way around the airport, is maintaining your healthy lifestyle. However, with some creative ways, you can still take care of yourself while traveling, regardless if it's for business or pleasure!

This past year, I had the pleasure of coaching employees of a large corporation. This was a new niche for me; not my typical client. A glimpse into corporate life showed me that individuals working for corporate America face a wide range of challenges quite different than those of us who are in business for ourselves. One of those challenges is sticking with healthy habits while traveling for business. When you need to be on the road two, three or even four times a month, sticking to a regular routine is not the norm.

This month I am finding that I will be getting a taste of a lifestyle that involves business travel. I will be on the road twice this month, and neither is for a vacation or fitness conference. So, this has me thinking about how to incorporate some of the strategies my corporate clients and I brainstormed during our work together. I hope some of these tips will help you stay fit on the road, regardless of your reasons for travel. Happy trails!

Tips to Stay Fit While Traveling

  1. Whenever possible, book a hotel with a fitness facility. No doubt about it, convenience is key to fitting in fitness. When you are only an elevator ride away from the gym, the chances that you'll use it increase. Check meeting schedules and appointments, and plan your workout time in advance.
  2. Wear your sneakers while traveling. Airports and train stations always include long corridors and long waits. Use them to include brisk walking. Avoid moving walkways, and take stairs rather than escalators. Make sure your carry-on is on wheels so that it won't hinder your movement. If driving, take a break every 90-120 minutes, and walk around the parking lot of a rest stop.
  3. If your travels include long layovers in the airport, find out if there is an airport fitness facility. Most large airports in major cities have areas to work out and shower. Some even have spa amenities such as massages or nail services.   4. Ask the hotel concierge for a map of walking/running trails that are nearby and safe. Ending a long day of back-to-back indoor meetings with some outdoor exercise is rejuvenating, and a great way to burn some calories before a business dinner.
  5. If your hotel does not have a fitness facility, ask if they have a relationship with a nearby health club. Most hotels without fitness facilities have established a relationship with a club where hotel guests can go for free or for a nominal fee.
  6. Pack resistance tubing and a jump rope and turn your room into a mini gym. Even a 20-minute routine including push-ups, crunches, squats, and lunges, will help maintain your fitness level while away.
  7. Rather than a business meeting at breakfast, or cocktails at the end of the day, suggest talking while working out. Your business associate might be thrilled with the chance to get in his/her workout as well.
  8. Be determined and committed to maintaining your fitness, but be flexible with your routine. Don't allow your travels to be an excuse to stop working out, but recognize that even if you need to shorten your workout, some activity is always better than none.

The last one is the question of its authenticity. Are you aware that there are in fact 13 Hoodia plants? Among which only Hoodia Gordonii was proven to be effective. Thing is, it is not the entire plant but only the core is tested to have appetite suppressing qualities. Being rare as it is, a manufacturer who does not want anything but profit from the Hoodia phenomenon, can still claim their products contain the genuine plant with the use of its leaves, flowers and roots.

But don’t get upset too quickly. Although consumers are always the first victims of misleading products, there are ways to be more prudent by knowing what you’re dealing with.

What you can do initially is put extra time reading ingredients list. The capsules for instance should contain Hoodia Gordonii plant’s core primarily, but other than that there are three other components present: stearic acid, gelatine and magnesium stearate.

The mixture of these three components made up part of the capsule that includes the powdered form of the plant. Simply put, these components are safe.

Other components not mentioned above are nothing but additives. They do not contribute nor enhance the product’s main function: to inhibit appetite leading to weight loss. And those products containing extracts? They might contain pure Hoodia Gordonii core, but being an extract just makes it far from being very effective.

And according to research conducted by Alkemist Pharmaceuticals, over 80% of the Hoodia Gordonii capsules they tested, were found to be not 100% pure Hoodia Gordonii nor authentic.

Do Not Let the Recession Keep You From Staying Fit

Right now, in this economy, money is tight for just about 90% of Americans. If you are in a place where finances have got you down and holding you back from exercise, because maybe you cannot afford the gym membership, there are solutions for you. Yeah, we all know that you can go run on the street for free or perhaps workout with a friend, but I am talking about money saving exercise ideas that do not break the bank, but still give you the high level workout your body needs.

First, we can talk about that free stuff. Running, hiking, swimming (if you have a pool or lake), biking, these are all great activities that can give you a great cardio workout. So for now cardio workouts are a check. Very easy to accomplish and free, but what about muscle exercise.

As you know a gym membership can be fairly expensive, that is unless you pay an arm and a leg up front in order to get your monthly membership rates down. Well there are better, and cheaper ways to get a good workout. The problem with a gym is that you are the only motivation for yourself. If you have a gym membership, ask yourself how many times you have used the membership in the last 2 weeks.

I will ask the people in my office right now... I am working with 4 other people all of which have gym memberships. Dain has been to the gym 4 times in the last 2 weeks, Michelle has been to the gym 2 times in the last MONTH, Brianna has been 3 times in the last 2 weeks and Steve has been 4 times in the last 2 weeks. Get this NONE of them have been to the gym even 30% of the days that they pay for it. I, myself, do not have a gym membership, I use my money other ways and exercise in ways that are much more motivating and give myself a "personal" in home trainer to keep me going.

I am talking about getting a home video workout program. Right now I am going through the Chalean Extreme workout. I have exercised 10 of the last 14 days, and that is because the program calls for 2 rest days a week. The best part about this is that the program did not even cost me as much as just the start up costs at a gym would cost. The workouts in this video are extreme effective and I am saving tons of money. There are some really great home workout videos you can use to get an amazing workout. One of the reasons a home video is so affective in getting you to workout everyday is because it is like you are a trainer guiding you through a whole fitness program. There is a clear start and a clear finish.

If you do not have a gym membership right now try picking up one of many great home DVD workouts, they usually last 3 months or so, and they are extremely effective if you repeat them. This small tip could save you hundreds of dollars in gym membership fees. Let's face it, you will probably be just like everyone in my office and hardly use the membership anyway.
