Being a personal trainer, the first thing I am always asked is, "Hey Shane, what is the best exercise to lose belly fat?" Then I pause, and have to repeat the answer that I told many, many people before them...There is NO ONE best exercise that can burn the fat off your mid-section...there is only a combination of very specific regiments that you must follow if you ever want to see rippled abs poke through your tummy.

Below, I have outlined a simple 3 Step Matrix that when matched correctly to your lifestyle, can become the formula for success in your quest for six-pack abs. So let's see what they are...

Step #1:

Monitor your calories. Emotional eating and weight gain are closely linked. This article will emphasize on how emotional eating results in overeating and finally weight gain. Depression/sadness: You must try to identify the reason for your depression. Once you identify it, you must try putting your feeling into words either in a journal or by talking with a friend.
Anger: You must take some time out and calm yourself down by using relaxation techniques or going for a walk.
Anxiety: First the cause of anxiety must be found by you. If it is caused by coffee or something that you have taken internally, you must try to find a way to correct the situation from happening again.
Stress: You should visualize yourself in a calm relaxing place while taking in slow, deep breaths.
Tiredness: You must take a short nap or get some exercise.
Celebration: By all means you should celebrate! Celebration must include getting together with friends, going to a movie, buying something that you have been wishing or going for nice dancing. You can use your imagination. A celebration does not mean he must include food- and eat….eat… and eat! Or drink…drink….and drink!

Last Year I Finally Quit Smoking - Weight Gain is Not a Problem!

About six months ago I finally won my twenty-year battle with tobacco. I had been smoking about a pack every day for almost that entire time, and when I quit smoking weight gain was a big concern for me. I was not exactly what you might call "in shape" at the time. My health had been steadily declining, and I was much more comfortable on a couch than a treadmill. You might even say I struck fear into the hearts of any junk food products that got within close range of my hands or mouth!

How To Quit Smoking Without Weight Gain

There are many smokers who smoke cigarettes because of the supposed weight loss that they get because of it. And for some other people, though it is not the motive why they want to use cigarettes, the cause they do not stop smoking might be because they will actually gain few pounds after stopping.

One of the hardest to abandon is that cigarette following eating. Lots of people have straightly associated smoking with eating. When you finish eating, it is also beneficial to do some exercises. Instead of smoking after meals, just do some basic stretching. Go for a walk, take a dip, play some games. This will help you keep your weight down, and also make your lungs recover faster and improve your health condition.

When stopping smoking, it is very tempting to eat unproperly. So as not to gain weight, prepare for this snacking. Instead of taking junk foods and other fat foods, eat vegetables and fresh fruits. These will satisfy your craving to have something to eat, and at the same time not give you the unwanted calories you want to avoid.

To conclude, it is really very not easy to not gain few pounds when quitting smoking. However, you must hope. With the right motivation, good preparation, you can certainly battle both the habit and the sudden weight gain.

Burn Fat Faster With Personal Trainer Marzia Prince

Awhile back I got to do an extensive interview with Marzia Prince.

Today, I'm going to share her fitness training program she revealed to me during that interview. If you've seen her full page ads in all the big fitness magazines, you know what kind of shape Marzia is in.

At the time, she was training for a sprint triathlon.

Marzia Prince is a:

  • Certified Physical Fitness Specialist
  • Pre/Postnatal Fitness Instructor
  • Biomechanics of Resistance Training
  • Fitness Specialist for Older Adults (65+)
  • Coaching Healthy Behaviors
  • and CPR Certified

She runs a thriving personal training business, competes as a fitness competitor and continues to model as well.

In her own words, here's the Marzia Prince fitness program that will help you burn fat faster and develop a lean, sexy, healthy body you can be proud of.

"I had to change my workout routine since I'm training for a sprint triathlon. A sprint triathlon consists of a 350 meter swim, 13 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run to the finish line.

My (Marzia's) exercise program consists of running, biking, swimming, weight training, plyometrics, Pilates, yoga, and extra stretching before I go to bed.

I do one to two workouts a day. I take one day off to rest and recover. I usually do my running/biking/swimming as my cardio and three days of weight training.

I always warm up before the workout and stretch after to prevent injury. I'm a firm believer in stretching so you don't limit your own range of motion (and it feels great when you are sore!).

CARDIO: Run / Bike / Swim for 1 hour

WEIGHTS: Circuit training with plymetrics between the circuits

STRETCTHING: Yoga, Pilates, or assisted rope stretching

FAVORITE BODY PART TO TRAIN: Glutes and Abs

DAY 1: Two Workouts

Morning Cardio: Run 4 - 6 miles (indoors or outdoors)

Afternoon: Weight training and plyometrics (Back / Chest / Abs)

Bedtime: Stretch

DAY 2: Two Workouts

Morning cardio: Bike for 1 hour (spin class or bike outside)

Afternoon: Pilates or yoga class

Bedtime: Stretch

DAY 3: Two Workouts

Morning cardio: Swimming laps for 30 - 40 minutes

Afternoon: Weight training & plyometrics (Legs / Abs)

Bedtime: Stretch

DAY 4: Two Workouts

Morning cardio: Run 4 - 6 miles (indoors or outdoors)

Afternoon: Pilates or yoga class

Bedtime: Stretch

DAY 5: Two Workouts

Morning cardio: Swimming laps for 30 - 40 minutes

Afternoon: Weight training & plyometrics (Arms / Abs)

Bedtime: Stretch

DAY 6: One Workouts

I usually combine two of the three (run / bike / swim) together to practice the transition between them for the competition. I alternate and change them up. Then I stretch.

Example: Run 3 miles and then hop on the bike immediately for 13 miles. Bike 13 miles and then immediately dive into the pool for a 350 meter swim.

DAY 7: Rest and Stretch

Wow. That's a week in the fitness training life of Marzia Prince.

Now, I know a lot of people's minds automatically go to excuses as to why they can't do certain things. I've shared this with friends and they respond with, "sure, it's easy for her. All she has to do is train and look good for modeling. I have to work for a living."

Sorry, but that's not true. Marzia has a jam-packed schedule. She runs her own thriving personal training business that has her training clients all day. Marzia Prince Interview Marzia is not a big fan of the 'don't have time' excuse. Or any excuse for that matter.

Staying Fit Over Forty

Now in my 50's, I learned the hard way that you cannot train the same as you did in your twenties. For one thing, you have more responsibilities and less time. The other thing is that you probably do not recover as quickly as you might have in your late teens and early twenties. So, the practice of training the same way, day in and day out is a sure way to become stale and frustrated. While training, like running, the same time and distance every day is admirable, you can get better results by varying your training.

One of my training buddies, who used to compete in cycling on an international level, showed me how to use interval training to improve my running. Instead of plugging with distance running, I would run for one minute and walk for one minute over the same distance. I trained less, but got better results. It was a bit uncomfortable the first few times, but I quickly improved and got more done in less time.

When you cross the big 4-0, you might find that you have to give your joints and tendons more time to recover. This is not a ticket to slack off. Again, you just have to be smarter when you train. If you are going to run, stay on sand, grass or gravel. One of my clients, who had recovered from a broken pelvis, could run on sand without much discomfort. After a month, she could run several hundred meters on the sand while carrying her 6 year old son on her back.

Cross-training is another way to keep training fresh and spare your joints. An article in Runner's World once mentioned how several runners improved their time by cross training with cycling rather than just running alone. I found that my own running improved by alternating my running with cycling.

Another area that the over 40 person should practise is strength training. Strength training or "resistance-training" is highly under-rated for conditioning. Often thought of only for "showy muscles" and "body beautifuls," strength training has several benefits that endurance training does not. Strength training builds bone density and increases the body's anabolism, which is the ability to repair and rebuild itself.

Another aspect of strength training that is almost always over-looked is the balance and posture muscles. These can be trained through methods such as martial arts, pilates and power yoga. Now before anyone starts writing off pilates and power yoga as "too Hollywood," keep in mind that these systems work. Pilates inventor, Joseph H. Pilates was an accomplished athlete who trained such celebrities as world class boxer, Max Schmeling. As for power (Ashtanga) yoga, I can vouch for it for removing back pain. One of my trainees, a former RCR soldier told me that he went from 3 chiropractor visits per week to only one per month just from our twice weekly power yoga sessions.

Another good body maintainer is the sauna. While often mistaken for a method for losing weight, regular saunas will clean out the excess toxins, increase your immune system T-cells and help calm you. It is great on a Sunday evening a few hours before bed time.

More tips to get more mileage out of the over 40 frame:

• Eat good natural food. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain massive amounts of anti-oxidants to slow down the aging process.

• If necessary, employ the services of physical therapists: massage, physiotherapist, chiropractic and even acupuncture.

• Supplements such as: fish oils, glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate assist some people with joint pain.

• Keep the alcohol, tobacco and caffeine to a minimum. This stuff overworks your adrenalin glands which are suppose to help carry you into old age.

• Avoid refined foods like white sugar and white flour. It just plugs up your intestines.

• Avoid extended periods of sitting. Too much sitting is hard on the spine and can contribute to DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis).

• Stay active. In an era where everything seems to have a warning label, there should be one on the human butt: Warning: Keep moving or equipment will fail.

Burn Fat Fast With Negative Calorie Foods

If you want to burn fat and lose weight safely, why not take advantage of some of nature’s most perfect foods? These are foods that not only taste great, but work with your body to burn fat and accelerate your weight loss at the same time.

These are called “negative calorie foods” because of the way your body processes them. By eating negative calorie foods, you actually burn fat and see weight loss because your body burns more calories digesting these foods than you actually take in from eating them.

In other words, a dessert containing 450 calories may only take 150 calories for your body to digest. So you have a net gain of 300 calories. But a fresh vegetable that has around 50 calories will take your body 100 calories to digest. So you are burning 50 more calories than you are taking in, resulting in a “negative” caloric intake of 50 calories.

What is a perfect example? An apple. Not only is an apple tasty and good for you (an apple a day, remember) but a medium sized apple puts about 100 calories into your system.

However, you burn around 130 to 150 calories to digest the apple; so you are burning more calories through digestion of the apple than you are taking in from eating it. You actually have a negative caloric intake from eating the apple.

There are several excellent negative calorie foods that you should try and incorporate into your diet on an everyday basis if you want to burn fat and lose weight. And not surprisingly, these foods are some of the healthiest foods you can eat when it comes to weight loss.

However, don’t design a diet using only negative calorie foods. That would not only be boring, but unhealthy for you as well. Why not try and incorporate negative calorie foods as a supplement to what you would normally eat on a daily basis?

For example, instead of that baked potato, why not have some extra broccoli, spinach, or some other leafy greens instead? Substitute that high sugar cereal with some yogurt and fresh blueberries, strawberries, or blackberries.

And everyone has heard of the “grapefruit diet”; the grapefruit diet works because it is another negative calorie food. Sweeten the tartness of grapefruit with a little cinnamon (which helps bump up your metabolism as well).

Substitute salmon for that steak or prime rib; not only is salmon high in protein and omega 3 fats (the good fat), but it is another great negative calorie food that your body craves. And grilled salmon is one of the best tasting fish recipes available to you.

Nuts are a great substitute for candy; replace those Hershey kisses with a handful of almonds or cashews. Nuts are a great source of vegetable protein, and they boost the immune system as well as lowering bad cholesterol levels.

Also, replace those sodas with some green tea. Green tea is loaded with antioxidants, and has a high thermogenic effect which cranks up your metabolism to help burn fat and lose weight as well.

And there is no special green tea you need to get at some health food store. Simple green tea you find at the grocery store will work just fine. If you can’t take the taste of green tea, try some green tea extract available in pill form in the vitamin aisle. Just make sure that you get the 500 mg or higher tablets to get the full benefits of the antioxidants in green tea.

Or try the old standby of simply adding some fresh squeezed lemon to a glass of water. Most citrus fruits are negative calorie foods, and they have a full complement of nutrients that your body needs.

Try and experiment with adding at least one negative calorie food to every meal. You are not going to drop 20 pounds overnight; but over time you will see results in your quest to burn fat and lose weight.

And it will also be a healthy weight loss, since most negative calorie foods are good for your body in the first place.

Fat loss diets for women has made millions of people rich. How? simple, these people "stalk" desperate women who would do anything to lose weight.

I hate it because they use misleading advertising

I don't know about you but I do not believe some of the things they say about the diet plans on TV. I do not want to get into details lest I go against the powers that be and get into trouble but I am sure you know what I am talking about. The point is, most advertising for fat loss diets is misleading at least 80% of the time.

They do not tell you the things you need to know

Give a man fish and you have helped him for a day and teach the man how to fish and you would have helped him for a lifetime. I strongly believe in this philosophy. While it is all well and good to have a fat loss diet plan drawn out to you, you also need to understand the underlying factors.

You need a program that tells you what is causing you to gain weight and how the program will help you exactly.

The diets are not custom made for each unique woman

Every woman is different from the other. You are you and your body responds differently to different things. When a diet plan is being sold to the masses I often cringe because I doubt its effectiveness in all woman. In fact this goes to prove my point. What Are The BEST Exercises To LOSE FAT?

This question is one of the most common questions I get at dinner parties and social events. We are an over weight society that is looking for quick fixes as the answer to all of our problems - and being over weight or obese is a HUGE problem. Research has clearly shown a link between degenerative disease and a lack of exercise and poor diet.

There is hope. Our body is an amazing machine and can completely change itself given the right training program and diet. So let's focus now on the best exercises to lose fat.

What makes an exercise the best?

The best exercise is the one that engages in the most amount of muscle. This would include pull ups, bench press, squats and leg press. By engaging in large muscle groups like back and legs, a person can completely reshape their body. One of the common mistakes that I see at the gym is the fact that people have a tendency to focus on small muscle groups like shoulders and arms.

The key to fat loss is adding more muscle to your frame. The more muscle you have the faster your metabolism. The less muscle you have the slower your metabolism. Research shows that without weight training, after 25 years of age a person's muscle mass will begin to decline. This decline is the primary cause of fat loss as we age. Why? Simple because the less muscle you have the slower your metabolism. Therefore, as we get older we eat approximately the same calories but yet have less muscle or a slower metabolism.

Now, let's go back to the best exercises to lose fat. By performing exercise like Squats and Pull ups, you will be stimulating large muscle groups. The legs and back muscles are about 60% of our muscle mass. By focusing on these groups, you will be stimulating the larger muscle groups causing an increase in muscle thereby increasing your metabolism. This fact is true for both men and women. It is just as important for a woman to perform strength training compared to a man. The reason is that woman has a lot less muscle and testosterone compared to man. This is one of the primary reasons why woman have a harder time losing body fat. When men lift weights, because of extra testosterone they have a greater ability to gain muscle.

Because of the difference in metabolism between men and woman, it is critical that woman lift weights. One of the common trends among females is that woman will pursue other modalities such as Yoga, Pilates, or running/cardio training. While there are benefits to each modality listed, the best way to increase metabolism and muscle is to lift weights. This time tested method has been proven by research as the best way to increase muscle mass thereby increasing metabolism.

I would advise using a combination of weight training and cardio to attain the best results. As for weight training, learn the 4 basic exercises listed above. Make sure that you go to the point of exhaustion which means that when performing an exercise you push yourself until you can't lift another rep. The point of exhaustion is what stimulates muscles to grow. If you fall short of the point of exhaustion your body does not have much of a reason to add muscle.

Four Basic Movements

When putting together an exercise program for yourself, I would advise 1 to 2 sets maximum for each exercise. The ones that I've listed are:

• Leg Press
• Squat
• Pull Up
• Bench Press (Bar Bell or Dumbbell)

For a long time in the fitness industry, the more is better approach was pursued by most in the fitness experts. Research now shows that you only need to do one set per exercise to see maximum results. Simply put, more sets are not better. What is better is to perform "less sets" and to make sure that you go to the point of exhaustion. If you're interested in the research, please go to the "health article" section on my website.

Diet and Nutrition

Of course even the best workout won't help you lose fat if you haven't optimized your diet. On my website I have a free grocery list and sample meals. The most important aspect to eating healthy is eating 5 times a day and have lots of fruits and veggies in your diet. Fruits and veggies are better than fat loss supplements because they provide lots of nutrients and the extra fiber can act as an appetite suppressant.

Summary

These methods will help you to burn more calories, increase muscle, enhance metabolic rate, and will stimulate the production of more fat burning and muscle toning hormones. Of course, there is more involved to achieving your fitness goals. You need to consistently challenge yourself during workouts and take control of your eating habits.

Chicken Recipe

Dijon mustard gives chicken breast a whole new tangy flavor which is complimented by a touch of rosemary. This healthy dinner take only 5 minutes to prepare with a 30 minute cook time.
Servings: 4

Here's what you need...

• 4 boneless skinless chicken breast halves
• 1/4 cup Dijon mustard
• 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary leaves, crushed
• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
• 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
• 2 cups hot cooked instant rice (cooked as directed on package, omitting margarine and salt)
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley

1. Heat oven to 375. Spray 12x8 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. Place chicken in sprayed dish. In small bowl, combine mustard, rosemary, oil and lemon juice; beat until well blended. With back of spoon, spread mustard mixture over chicken to coat thoroughly.

2. Bake at 375 for 25 to 30 minutes or until chicken is fork-tender and juices run clear.

3. Meanwhile, cook rice as directed.

Carbs and Weight Gain

In our society everything is done to "simplify" our lives: frozen and canned foods, ready made sandwiches, fast food and "fast" soft drinks. Soft drinks are especially popular. They promise high energy, high vitamin content and make other claims to create a healthy image. They seem to be an easy way to get everything we need. The beverages that we drink daily don't even register in our brain as food, however the daily intake of sugar-loaded beverages contributes to weight gain. A study showed that by merely decreasing the consumption of soft drinks people were able to lose weight. Since for many people calories from soft drinks constitute a significant part of their diet, no wonder the low carb diets are so popular. Carbs are associated with sugar-loaded drinks, white flour products and other unhealthy food.

However low carb diets lead to over consumption of protein that is equally damaging to health. Instead of decreasing the consumption of carbs it is better to substitute high glycemic index ones with higher sugar content with low-glycemic index ones that can provide us with energy over a period of time.

So which carbs are good for your health and weight loss? You guessed it right, vegetables and fruits.

If you want to lose weight, decrease the consumption of fruits with high sugar content such as grapes, figs, bananas. Also dilute fruit juices with water to decrease the sugar content. Eat more apples preferably without mixing them with any other food.

Eat plenty of vegetables raw or cooked. You can eat vegetables raw with a healthy dip or in salads; you can also bake, steam, steam-fry or stir-fry them and make soups. There are many delicious recipes that you can use daily to introduce the healthier carbs into your diet. Raw vegetables are full of enzymes that will not only improve your digestion but will also make you look younger. They are loaded with phytochemicals many of them are yet to be discovered. These phytochemicals are essential for our health.

Foods That Burn Fat - Spotlight on Protein

Let's take a closer look at some of the best foods that burn fat. Foods that are especially conducive to fat-burning work in two ways: by decreasing appetite and by increasing metabolism.

Scientific studies have shown that protein keeps people more satisfied than either fat or carbohydrates; this may be due to the fact that it takes longer to digest than it does for fat and carbs. This means that it will take longer to feel hungry again. In effect, your appetite will be decreased between meals, making the temptation to snack less appealing.

Protein also increases the metabolic rate through what is known as the "thermic effect of food". The thermic effect refers to energy above your resting metabolic rate required to digest, absorb, and eliminate ingested food. This process takes more energy for some foods than for others. In general the thermic effect ranges from 3-30% as shown below.

  • fats: 3%
  • carbohydrates, including fruits and vegetables: 20%
  • protein: 30%

To stimulate your metabolism, try to eat some of the foods listed below with each meal. Unless otherwise noted, a good portion would be equivalent to the size of your fist. Carbs are an important energy source, and should be eaten regularly as well. Healthful fats are also important, but are more calorically dense and should be eaten more sparingly.

Meats and Fish

  • chicken - 3.5 oz., 30 grams
  • turkey - 7 grams per ounce
  • tuna - 6 oz. can, 40 grams
  • salmon - 3.5 oz., 27 grams

Dairy

  • eggs - 1 large, 7 grams
  • milk - 1 cup, 8 grams
  • cottage Cheese - 1/2 cup, 15 grams
  • yogurt- 1 cup, 8-12 grams

Nuts

  • almonds, peanuts, cashews - 1/4 cup: 8grams, 9 grams, 5 grams
  • peanut butter - 2 Tablespoons, 8 grams

Note that this list is ranked from most lean to least lean. For optimal fat-burning results, eat more foods from the top of the list and fewer from the bottom.

The Importance of Staying Fit

When age catches up with us and we cut ourselves a sorry figure, lose all confidence, the mantra of staying fit has more sweetness to it than anything else. Anything that promises to keep you young, vibrant and youthful catches your fancy and you shell out your hard earnt dollars without a second thought. When the world is fed on global feasting and more and more delectable food, often fat laden foods tickle our palate, who could blame us if our waistlines or thighs started expanding? More than that, our lifestyle has changed tremendously.

The pleasure of driving a sedan has made us forget that we were given two legs to travel distances. We have become slaves of comforts provided by modern technology. Everything comes to us these days at the click of a mouse. We have become couched potatoes with little desire to be active. Inactivity has become a habit in that we don't mind sitting idle for hours wasting precious energy and life. This becomes a bane when we hit our middle ages. Our youth is always brimming with activity. Your metabolic rate was always at a fast pace and fat had little or no place on your body. The greatest physical decline happens between the age group of thirty and forty.

During this phase, our metabolism slows down quite dramatically, we lose large amounts of muscle mass, bones lose their flexibility and density and for the saddest part the amount of body fat starts to increase. A slower metabolism is one the biggest reasons for the physical decline of health. The other being our inactivity, we have no one to blame but ourselves and our sedentary lifestyles. We have long forgotten the art of walking, cooking healthy meals at home, and regular daily exercise. As we are after comforts it is so easy to slip into the habit of idleness.

Simple exercises on a regular basis can help you to keep you fit and prevent muscle loss and bone degeneration. Aerobic activities such as swimming, cycling, running are all good and will also help to keep away stress and anxiety. Mild to moderate depression and anxiety can also be dispelled by following simple exercise programs.

Regular aerobic activity accelerates the metabolic rate and this in turn will burn those extra calories which would otherwise get deposited as fat on your body. Always remember the really important saying that you really are what you eat. So instead of falling for all that is junk and lacks nutrition, try sticking to a more balanced diet. Add some fresh fruit and vegetables to your diet. A dietary allowance of at least twenty five grams of fiber should also be included in your meals daily. Remember that rock hard abs and bulging muscles do not determine your fitness level. Just sweeping around the courtyard, wiping the kitchen floor and washing linen can help you rather than keeping idle. Yoga also can help you to keep fit and relieve you of stress.
