Is Hoodia Completely Natural?

The rare plant of Hoodia is not a drug and it is completely natural. Hoodia is a species that is of the Apocynaceae plat family. It is a rare plant that only grows within the Botswana, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia, and South African semi-deserts. Since the Hoodia plant takes a good five years before being able to be properly ready for harvesting.

The San Bushmen people of the Kalahari Desert have been using Hoodia Gordonii for thousands of years to help them cope with hunger and thirst at times when they were deprived of food (for instance when they were on long hunting expeditions in the desert). Although, this is a bitter-tasting plant when eaten, it does not have any form of a bad after taste for those that eat the plant straight.

It is only the Gordonii variation of the Hoodia plant that has the ability to properly suppress the appetite. This fact makes it extremely important to only purchase pure Hoodia products that are directly from the Gordonii Hoodia plant, or you will be wasting you money.

Exercises That Encourage Rapid Fat Loss

There are a number of programs that you can do to lose fat quickly. Most people will find several on the Internet and you may even find a fitness trainer or two that will tell you what to do.

However, sometimes they don't really tell you what types of exercises that will work. Instead, they may promote one kind or another. The point to exercise for rapid fat loss however, is to find several things that you can do to make the fat leave quickly.

Here are some ideas that people have used that work quickly when you want to lose belly fat or have rapid fat loss:

Cardio Training

There are two ways to approach cardio training. You can start out with traditional training, especially when you have a lot to lose or you haven't trained in awhile. You can choose one that you like whether it is walking, jogging, cycling or rowing. Do this at a moderate pace and then you can increase the pace over time.

Another way to approach this is through interval cardio training. This is a more intense cardio and it is a combination of high intensity cardio and low intensity cardio. As an example, some people do this with walking. They start out walking at a slow-to-medium pace, and then walk very briskly for 20 seconds; they then slow down again. The point is to alternate the intense and the slower so that your body will raise your metabolism for the entire day. This burns fat quick.

Resistance Training

Many fitness experts say that combining resistance training with interval cardio training is the best of both worlds. The reason is because you can set it up so that you do your cardio, then pick up some free weights and do 6-12 reps, then go back to the cardio. However, you can also just do your resistance training so that you build lean muscle tissue. These two things together will help you burn fat quickly.

Aerobic Classes

Many people indulge themselves in aerobic or step classes and all of these work. They keep you working intensely for about 20 minutes or so and if you can keep up with the pace they also help you have rapid fat loss. You can start out slowly but this can be another way to do interval training so keep up the pace!

These are the many types of exercises that you can combine to lose fat quickly but you also have to understand that there is more to losing fat than meets the eye. You will still need to eat better in order for any exercise program to work for you.

There are many ways to eat. It is always good advice to eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Others swear by the Glycemic Index list of foods. The point of the Glycemic Index is to identify the "good carbs" that should be consumed as part of your meal. Still others have lots of lists of foods that are naturally able to burn fat like berries, greens beans and melons. The point is that if you want to have rapid fat loss, you need to put more than one idea into place.

The more ideas you use the less boredom you will experience and the more you will concentrate on your program. Most people start out doing really well and then falter because they get bored. However, if you have a set of things that you can do, if you change up your exercises you will find that instead of being bored, you are really enjoying your workouts. Burning fat quickly takes some dedication but can easily be done.

How to Avoid Weight Gain This Holiday Season

It's that time of year again when holiday weight gain becomes a problem for many people. The holidays are a difficult time of the year for dieters and exercisers. Holiday shopping and cooking takes up time for exercise, and with all those special holiday treats we all feel like kids let loose in a candy shop.

The average person gains about 1 pound per holiday. That's about 5lbs in a 3 month span. And if you belong to a mixed religious family like myself, that number can increase with each holiday event.

So how do you fight back the holiday bulge?

  • Make a schedule. When we plan things ahead of time we are more likely to do it. Make time for exercise. You may cut back from 4-5 days a week to 3 days a week but make sure to keep exercise consistent. When you start making excuses to not do something it gets harder and harder each time to start again.
  • Water is you friend. The holidays are full of alcoholic beverages, eggnogs, and ciders. Try to avoid these be always having a glass of water in hand. Not only will it remind you to stay away from the empty calories in alcoholic beverages, but also keep your hand out of the chip bowl. If you find your hand still wandering into junk food, sit yourself next to a bowl of fruit or vegetables to pick on instead.
  • NEVER skip meals. We all do it. We plan on sitting down to a big feast so we decide we will skip breakfast to compensate. This is the worst thing we can do for our body. Not only does it make us prone to binge eating it also makes the body more likely to store the foods we do eat as fat. Skipping meals causes your body to go into starvation mode where it stores fats as quickly as possible.
  • Enjoy good conversation. The holidays are a time for family and friends. Take the time to catch up and enjoy each others company. If you are busy talking, you will not be eating. Also, surrounding yourself with good friends can help ease the pain of a lost love one.
  • Allow yourself to a treat. Just because you are trying to avoid weight gain does no mean you have to avoid all sweats. Most of your added calories come from gravies, dressings, and alcohol. Go ahead and split a piece of your favorite pie with someone. Enjoy a sugar cookie. Denying yourself treats will only make you want them more.

Follow these tips during the holidays to avoid gaining excess weight. Do not give up on dieting and exercise saying you will start up again at New Year's. Keep you exercise going and enjoy the company of your family and friends.

Staying Fit at University

I wasn't like most kids; I was afraid of stickers. That's not really the point though, the other reason I wasn't like most kids, was that when I was going to University I was a bit nervous, like anyone, but unlike my mates the main reasons I was worried was that I thought I might lose muscle. I knew that I'd be out partying every night, cramming my work in somewhere, living off a tiny budget and sleeping in a room where I could touch all four walls without getting up (or even straightening my arm as it turned out). Still, when I got to University I found that my worries were unfounded and I actually became stronger than I was before. I'm on my year out now doing a placement in Leeds but as I reminisce I can pass on to you the secrets that will bring you success in the gym and mediocrity in the exam room.

The way I see it there are a few major obstacles and each one can be effectively neutralised if you know what to do, and you will if you read below:

Money

Okay, so you might not have quite as much dough available to you as you once did. This is a problem when buying equipment/stuffing your face with protein. However Uni life also has advantages on this front. For example gym membership; at Surrey University you can get a full year's membership for about £75. That's not bad seeing as the same money would fetch me two months at my current gym.

Food

That doesn't solve the problem of the food though, and so here's how to eat big without spending too much.

First of all find your nearest Asda, Lidle, Audi, Morissons or other cheap super market. Tesco will do fine too if you stick to the Tesco's own range (but not their mayonnaise...).

Tuna pasta salad is a staple in the student's diet anyway and that suites us bodybuilding scholars just fine. Buying cans of tuna in bulk (a good workout in itself when you trek home with a few heavy bags) is not only cheap, but it also saves you from having to go shopping too often. It can then be mixed with some pasta and onion to make a good meal high in carbs and protein (add a tin of chopped tomatoes for variation). Alternatively stick it on some bread, adding mayonnaise depending on how strict you are (but not Tesco's own mayonnaise...).

Another useful food item for students and bodybuilders alike is the egg. So simple and beautiful the egg can be eaten raw, or cracked over some hot pasta with a tiny bit of parmesan cheese to make carbonara (should be called proteinandcarbonara, although no one would probably eat it then).

Whether or not you can afford supplements is really down to your personal situation and how well you budget. Unlike the food though your Mum probably never bought you protein shakes anyway so it shouldn't be too much of a shock to carry on paying for them. Personally I never used any supplements throughout Uni anyway.

Social Life

The real reason you go to University though is not to train... but to party! The hierarchy of priorities should go thus:

1. Party

2. Train

3. Eat Sandwiches

4. Study

In other words, you don't want to waste away your whole student life in the gym or abstain from any fun incase it hurts your figure. You should still go out every time you are invited and you should still drink just as much as everyone else. That's what Uni is all about, think of it as a gym for life. However, there are certain methods you can use as damage limitation.

Firstly what you drink is just as important than how much you drink in terms of getting a beer belly. When possible drink spirits instead of lager and steer away from Guinness (except on St Patrick's day of course). My favourite drink is Newcastle Brown, but that is almost as bad as Guinness so I keep it as a treat. JD and Coke became my drink of choice for most nights out. A bottle of wine every now and then doesn't any harm either. Do not drink rosé however and do not drink alcopops; these are for girls and girly men.

Secondly, if you're worried about the amount you've drunk there's a simple way to burn it off - on the dance floor. Throw your arms in the air and kick your legs like an insane man; University is one of the few places you can get away with this. If you're lucky then you may be able to burn off a few more calories later with a lady friend. If you're like me however, then the aforementioned throwing the arms around will probably mean this isn't the case.

When it's time to go home, try to make sure you walk when possible. You will not only burn off some more alcohol but will also sober up more ready for a day of heavy lifting tomorrow.

If you know you're going for a big night out then try to get in a quick session before you go. If time is sparse then do an 'express session' which consists of half the amount of exercises, or 2 sets instead of three. If the night out is an off-the-cuff thing however (the best kind), then just get to the gym first thing next day (as soon as that hang over goes away).

Of course training can be a social experience in itself if you find yourself a gym buddy or two and there's few better ways to bond with a mate than by going through an intense workout. There may even be a club you can join, I'm thinking of starting a bodybuilding society when I go back next year. For my first two years though I was a member of the Rock Climbing club, which made a fantastic regular workout for the forearms, lats and calves.

Time

Going to University means that you spend allot of time going out and partying, a bit of time at lectures and an obscene amount of time sleeping. It's a little known fact that students sleep all the time. Some part of the brain seems to revert to childhood when day-time naps were cool (all the other babies were doing it). Only these aren't power naps but full on 3 hour sessions. When students aren't doing this they're watching Hollyoaks, Lost, Scrubs or 24.

In other words, students who complain of having no free time are talking nonsense. Now that I have had a glimpse of working life I realise just how good I had it (man I'm starting to sound like my Mother). I used to spend hours with my house mate rating girls on Hot or Not during the day. Eventually we moved on to rating girls who walked past his window (yeah we weren't that cool).

In other words, get your lazy behind to the gym. Especially as it's now only a ten minute walk from your room. Alternatively, if you've space working out at home can easily be squeezed in during nights in since you will most likely have turned mostly nocturnal. There's no Desperate Housewives on at this time so you may as well do a workout.

Space

Students are not known for their spacious living quarters, particularly freshers who will most likely live in halls. While you will be able to go to the gym most days, there will be times when working out at home is necessary and 'there's not enough space in my room' is an excuse I hear regularly.

The only space you need is a clear patch that's 6 foot by 4 foot to do press ups and sit ups in (unless you're a giant in which case you might need a few extra inches). You can sit on your bed to do curls and rest your hands on it to do dips. You can even do sit ups on the bed if you're that pressed for space. Bottom line though - you've had mates sleep on the floor so there's definitely enough room for you to work out on it.

Next year will be better - you will likely have a house. Now you can work out in the living room (much to the dismay of your housemates). I got lucky in my second year in that I lived with a playground behind my house. How cool is that?

Other Hazards

There are a few hidden hazards for the bodybuilding student to beware of. One is colds. As a student you will always have a cold. Your best combat against this is fruit. Another hazard is travelling; as you will be travelling to and from home regularly and for long periods of time you are going to need to either buy a set of weights for each location, learn to drive or get some kind of exercise travel kit.

The drunken kebab is also a hazard. The simple way to beat this is to swap the kebab for a subway. A tuna subway. Get a big one too and make the most of those munchies. See there you've turned a negative into a positive. Life gave you lemons and you crushed them and squeezed the juice into your enemy's eyes.

Why Bother?

The hardcore bodybuilders among us never need to answer this question, but for those of you who aren't so hard core yet here's some convincing points

1. You are normally topless at Uni

2. If not, then you are in revealing fancy-dress

3. If you don't go to the gym at Uni then you will get fat

4. Working out is good for your brain

5. If you have a big nose then it's your best chance... (biggest reason for me)

6. People always challenge you to arm wrestles at Uni

So there. No excuses and every reason to get your academic butt in the gym. Party hard, study hard, eat sandwiches hard... and lift hard! Keep punching!

Get Outside and Burn Body Fat With This Fat Blasting Workout

My favourite training location for getting a sweat on and burning some of that good ol' body fat is to get outside and get stuck into some outdoor training.

If you have not done much training recently, make sure you first have a clearance from your doctor and substitute the sprints that I am about to give you for some fast power walking.

If you are in a regular training pattern and with no injuries, there are no excuses - it is time to work and burn fat!

As always you need a good warm up to ensure that you are not going to injure yourself. Try jogging up the hill and jogging down, perform 10 Squats and 10 Push Ups then jog backwards up the hill and forwards down again. Repeat this warm up three times.

Now you should be warm and ready for action.

Begin with a Bear crawl up the hill. To do this get down on all fours and crawl like a bear it is that simple! As for all exercises, make sure you are sucking in your belly button to protect your lower back. When you get to the top, jog backwards down the hill and sprint to the top. Make sure there are no obstacles in your way when jogging backwards downhill.

Once you are at the top, crab walk down the hill. To do this, sit on the ground facing downhill with your hands facing forward. Now lift your backside off the ground and walk yourself down the hill with your hands and feet. That is one set. Your goal is to repeat this five times through.

Once you are done, and if you still have got some energy in the tank you can try the crab walk uphill, bear crawl downhill, sprint uphill, and jog backwards downhill to complete one set. Repeat this set five times.

Survived that one? Your next challenge is to make your way to the grandstand or bleachers if your park has one. Starting on the bottom step, plyometric jump your way up the stairs to the top. Make sure you land soft on the balls of your feet and squat down as you land, so you are ready to go straight into the next plyometric jump. Your back should not hurt when you do these. Walk back down and repeat this five times if it is a small grandstand or if it is a big grandstand jump all the way to the top and that should have you toasted.

Of course, you want to finish off with a good stretch that will stretch all of the muscles that you have just worked - a full body stretch where you hold each muscle for at least twenty to thirty seconds.

This outdoor training session can be performed anywhere with a hill. It is a great fat blasting routine to ensure you burn fat in minimal time.

Is a Vegan Diet Best For Weight Loss?

I could not have not said it better myself! Skinny Bitch is definitely the most entertaining diet book I've ever read and it has been on the NY Times Best Seller list since 2007 and has 1 million copies in print. Apparently others are enjoying it too. The book is crystal-clear on what constitutes junk - alcohol, caffeine, chemical additives like aspartame, dairy, meat and refined sugar. Large numbers of readers have embraced the book, but like any diet book, it's not going to be for everyone.

I have been suggesting that my clients purchase the book because it is a great way to lean more about vegan diets. I believe that there is not one optimal nutrition plan for everybody, you need to try a few different approaches and see what works for your body. If you eat something and 2-3 hours later you feel bloated, tired or just plain crappy, then you need to reevaluate your future food choices, Listen to your body!

Skinny Bitch will teach you how to incorporate more fruits and veggies in to your diet and that's a good thing! Also, most vegan cheese, meat and dairy products are about 1/3 the fat and calories of the originals. Personally I tried to follow a vegetarian and vegan diet for 6 months and I was not receiving adequate amounts of protein to support my muscle building/fat burning workouts. Once I started incorporating fish and lean meats back in to my diet my body fat dropped 1.7%. About 4-5 times each week I eat vegan or vegetarian meals and my body is very happy. POTATO SKINS WITH ALL THE FIXINS

Serves 4 to 6 as an appetizer

3 medium russet potatoes, scrubbed and patted dry

Refined coconut oil, for the potatoes and the cooking sheet

6 slices vegan bacon, cooked according to package directions

4 ounces shredded vegan cheese (about 1 1/4 cups)

4 ounces shredded vegan Jack cheese (about 1 1/4 cups)

1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

3 scallions, thinly sliced

3/4 cup vegan sour cream

Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

Rub the potatoes with oil and place them on a large rimmed baking sheet. Bake until the potatoes are tender, about 1 hour. Set the potatoes aside until they're cool enough to handle, but keep the oven on.

Meanwhile, chop the bacon. In a medium bowl, combine the bacon, cheeses and parsley; aside.

Cut each potato into lengthwise quarters. Scoop out the insides, leaving a 1/4-inch layer of potato on the skins (save the insides for another use). Oil the baking sheet. Place the skins, skin side down and one inch apart, on the sheet. Sprinkle with the salt, pepper and the cheese mixture, dividing them evenly. Bake until the skins are crisp and the cheese is melted, about 15 minutes.

A new research study has produced a ringing endorsement of Advantra Z®, the patented Citrus aurantium (bitter orange) extract used for weight management. The easier you perceive your work-out to be, the likely you are to consistently engage in exercise as well as increase your amount of exercise.

This is the second study from Dr. Haller to demonstrate positive results for dietary supplements containing Advantra Z. In "Hemodynamic Effects of Ephedra-Free Weight-Loss Supplements in Humans," published September 9, 2005 in The American Journal of Medicine, she found that even in eight-fold higher dosages (40 mg synephrine per dose), Advantra Z did not affect blood pressure or cause central nervous stimulation. Again, this is great news as it confirms the safety of one of the most effective thermogenic, fat-burning, ingredients available today.

Hoodia, a South African herb, also has the weight loss community all abuzz. Authentic hoodia is one of the rarest botanicals in the world. It is a cactus like plant that grows exclusively in South Africa . Scientists have isolated several compounds in hoodia that helps suppress appetite. It contains a molecule called P57 that is 10,000 times as active as glucose. It goes to the mid-brain and makes those nerve cells feel as if you are full and this in turn stunts the appetite. It basically tricks the brain into thinking that you are full. To date, there are no known adverse side effects caused by the use of hoodia.

The chemical constituents in hoodia works within the satiety center by releasing a chemical compound similar to glucose, but is up to 100,000 times more powerful. The hypothalamus receives this signal as an indication that enough food has been consumed and this in turn stunts the appetite. This pure organic hoodia gordinii contains a molecule that, in effect, fools the brain into believing you are full, and can even stop the brain from thinking about food.

Although there isn't substantial published research on hoodia to date, the studies available appear to show quite impressive results.

Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), South Africa 's national laboratory, began studying hoodia and the initial results were promising -- lab animals lost weight after taking hoodia. Later, the South African scientists, working in conjunction with a British company named Phytopharm, isolated the active ingredient in hoodia, a steroidal glycoside, which they named p57. Phytopharm has spent more than $20 million on hoodia research. The company completed a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study in overweight, but otherwise healthy volunteers using the P57 extract from hoodia gordonii. The participants were split into two groups, one received the P57 and the other received a placebo. Each group was told to continue their normal diet and exercise. The results of the study were as follows:

When comparing the hoodia group to the Placebo group, the hoodia group had a statistically significant reduction in caloric intake, had a statistically significant reduction in body fat and had no adverse side effects. On average the hoodia group ate about 1,000 calories a day less than those in the control group. These are very impressive results when you consider that the average American man consumes about 2,600 calories a day; a woman about 1,900.

In animal studies, hoodia was proven to reduce caloric intake by 30 to 50 percent. Researchers at Brown University Medical School performed studies in 2004. In these studies "Zucker Rats" were fed hoodia. Zucker Rats are special rats that are bred to be obese and diabetic. Amazingly Zucker Rats that were fed hoodia lost weight and even saw some reversal of their diabetes.

The most efficient and long-lasting way to do that is to eat fewer (but healthier) calories and to burn up more calories (through effective exercise).

5. The abs belts and other contraptions seen on early-early morning infomercials are entertaining, but they won't do much for abdominal toning unless you pick them up and move them out of your way for a real workout. These gimmick machines exercise the wrong muscle groups - if they work at all. They don't put enough demand on the abdominal muscles to really do much besides making the person using them look kind of silly. Real results come from real exercises and real food. Fads and gimmicks are entertaining, but they just plain don't work.
